That’s a whole lot of crying! Brenda Russell started the trend in 1988, and it’s currently become a popular mix to sample by current artist.
The Sampled Lyrics
I know, caught up in the middle
I cry just a little
When I think of letting go
Oh no, gave up on the riddle
I cry just a little

Neu Era – Letting Go (Piano in the Dark)
More than twenty two years later, the lyrics were used as a sample and repeated in the original remix by the Neu Era remixers. The DJ artist is credited as Roger-M. The song is “Letting Go (Piano in the Dark) (Neu Era Radio Edit)”. There have been several remixed versions since then.
The first official release was in 2011, and quoted as “After Roger’s huge release ‘Turn up that vibe’ in 2010, he strikes back today with a masterpiece of disconish’ house. This time he lay his hands on ‘Brenda Russel’s’ classic ‘Piano in the dark’”. Beatport.com – Letting Go.
Bingo Players – Cry (Just a Little)
In 2011, the Dutch Dance Duo Bingo Players took the sampling a step further and released the song “Cry (Just a Little)”. They had the vocals peformed by Kelli-Leigh along with Hal Ritson. The music was re-sampled and repeated continuously. According to the Wikipedia entry Cry Just a Little, the song was originally released as a digital download. It went on to chart in Belgium and Netherlands.

Also in 2012, Qwote sampled “Cry (Just a Little)” by Bingo Players in his song “Letting Go (Cry Just a Little)”. His song is a bit more of a tribute, and the samples are used as a background chorus. In addition, his song features Pitball as a guest singer starting at about the 2:15 mark.
Brenda Russell has started a trend in her song Piano in the Dark. It may of be forgotten if weren’t for all these artist sampling her song. Personally, I’ve enjoyed all the versions released but would of never discovered the original if it weren’t for them. There may be new songs sampling Brenda’s lyrics, and those versions may be questionable. But they are all tributes to the original lyrics in Piano in the Dark.
