Utility Color Codes (Paints or Flags)

Before digging it is best to have all utilities marked. In most municipalities, it’s a free service. Underground utilities are then marked with either color coded paints and/or flags. The colors codes are standard and as follows:

International Utility Color Codes

RED Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables
YELLOW Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials
ORANGE Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit
BLUE Potable Water
GREEN Sewers, Drain Lines
PINK Survey Markings
WHITE Proposed Excavation
PURPLE Reclaimed Water, Irrigation, Slurry Lines
