Why the Can Bike OS (5.5): Kiosk Edition?

The primary reason was the desire to instantly turn a computer into a web kiosk for kids and guests, while protecting the contents of the hard drive.

It runs great on older hardware and instantly turns it into a web browsing kiosk

Simply place the live-cd into the CD/DVD drive. Boot the computer from the disc drive and wait for it too load.

No installation, minimal configuration (i.e. internet wireless connection).

I wanted a simple no fuss solution and this was it.

It Protects the Computer from Kids

First, It’s a live-CD. Nothing is saved. There’s very little kids can do to mess up the operating system. If they do, just reboot the live-CD and it’s back to it’s original state.

Second, access to the hard drives is restricted. There is no obvious way to access them.

Kids can be kids. They can surf the web and mess around. The important files on the hard drive remain free from being altered. Now it’s not fool proof as an experienced Linux user could find away around this. But by design, it will prevent non-technical users from doing any damage.

It’s Small and Fast

Based on Puppy Can Bike 5.5, which is based on Precise Puppy 5.5, it is a small and efficient Linux operating system. In addition, if there’s more than 256MB of ram, the whole Linux operating system will load and run entirely from RAM.

That means snappy performance as there’s no waiting for the optical drive or hard drive. It also means, the disc can be ejected safely.
