[GIMP] Bitcoin Animation - In Cryptogrpahy We Trust

For the fun of it, GIMP was used to render a semi-realistic looking token bitcoin. GIMP instructions are at the bottom of the page.

Using Kevin Dooley’s “Gorgeous golden Canadian coin” photo as a template, the logo and text were added to the image. Bump maps were then applied, along with bevel/emboss, and glow effects.

GIMP Instructions: Bitcoin

  • Note: The Layer Effects plugin is required for: “Bevel and Emboss” & “Outer Glow”
  1. Download Kevin Dooley’s “Gorgeous golden Canadian coin” photo to use as a template
  2. Use the circular select tool to select the outer edge of the coin
  3. Invert the selection
  4. Delete the background
  5. Use the circular select tool to select the inner part of the coin
  6. Feather the selection – 75px
  7. Gaussian Blur – 90px
  8. Create new layers and add overlay patterns to give the coin texture
  9. Add the bitcoin logo, without orange background, as a new layer
  10. Center it with alignment tools
  11. Layer -> Layer to Image Size
  12. Duplicate the bitcoin logo layer
  13. Alpha to select the duplicate logo
  14. Fill duplicate logo with black
  15. Shrink the selection by 6px
  16. Fill it with white
  17. Select none
  18. Gaussian blur the duplicate logo layer by 40px
  19. Set duplicate logo mode to “multiply”
  20. Merge it down with the logo layer
  21. Select the coin layer
  22. Filters -> Map -> Bump Map
    1. Bump Map: Logo Layer
    2. Map Type: Sinusoidal
    3. Azimuth: 135, Elevation 20, Depth: 28, Ambient 73
  23. Hide the logo layer
  24. GIMP plug-in: Bevel and Emboss the logo layer (Depth 3, Size 3)
  25. GIMP plug-in: Outer Glow the logo layer (Size 3)
  26. Move the outerglow layer above the shadow layer
  27. Use the circular select tool to select an inner circle for text
  28. Select -> To Path
  29. Add text “IN CRYPTOGRAPHY WE TRUST
    1. Font Arial Bold, Size 142, Letter Spacing 22
  30. Layer -> Text along Path
  31. Hide text layer
  32. Create a new layer
  33. “Circular text” Path to selection
  34. Gradient Shaped (Spherical), black and white
    1. Apply it to a small portion of a letter
    2. Outer edges of letters should be black, inner portion white
  35. Select the coin layer
  36. Filters -> Map -> Bump Map
    1. Bump Map: Circular text layer
    2. Map Type: Sinusoidal
    3. Azimuth: 45, Elevation 20, Depth: 3, Ambient 73
  37. Hide the circular text layer
  38. Hide the circular path for text
  39. GIMP plug-in: Bevel and Emboss the layer (Depth 3, Size 5)
  40. GIMP plug-in: Outer Glow the layer (Size 3)
  41. Save XCF file “coin”
  42. Save a copy PNG file “coin”

GIMP Animation: Bitcoin

  1. Open “coin” PNG file
  2. Add Bitcoin Logo as layer
  3. Move Bitcoin Logo layer to the bottom
  4. Filters -> Animation -> Burn-in
    1. Save animation as “part1.xcf”
    2. Close “part1.xcf”
  5. Move Bitcoin Logo layer to the top
  6. Filters -> Animation -> Burn-in
    1. Save animation as “part2.xcf”
    2. Close “part2.xcf”
  7. Close current project
  8. Open “part1.xcf”
  9. File -> Open as Layers -> “part2.xcf”
  10. Filters -> Animation -> Optimize (Difference)
  11. Filters -> Animation -> Optimize (for GIF)
  12. Alter middle frame delay from 100ms to 1000ms by renaming the layer
  13. Alter last frame delay from 100ms to 1000ms by renaming the layer
  14. Save XCF file “coin animation”
  15. Save a copy as a GIF animation file
